Harry Kane ends the Bundesliga’s Ballon d’Or drought

Harry Kane’s 2026 Ballon d’Or win does more than recognize a prolific season: it puts a Bundesliga player back at the top of football’s individual honors for the first time in 30 years. The Bayern Munich striker, now 33, is the first player from Germany’s top flight to win the award since Borussia Dortmund’s Matthias Sammer in 1996. Kane’s case rested on extraordinary output. Last season, he scored 73 goals for Bayern and England, the strongest season by any player in European football history apart from Lionel Messi’s 2011/12 campaign. That total makes the result easier to understand, though it doesn’t tell us how closely contested the vote was.

A vote from football journalists

Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal in a poll of 100 journalists, each representing one of the top 100 men’s national teams in FIFA’s rankings. He also won the Striker of the Year award. “I am almost speechless,” Kane said after Ronaldo Luís Nazário, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, presented him with the prize. The ceremony took place in London, which Kane called an added source of meaning and “a good omen.” He thanked the voters, acknowledged the strength of the field, and praised the winners and nominees, saying the night showed what determination and hard work can achieve. The award is a landmark for the Bundesliga. The larger question is whether Kane’s record-breaking season marks a lasting shift in the league’s standing among the world’s best players, or a rare peak built around one exceptional campaign. The figures establish the scale of his achievement; they don’t answer that yet.

A season worthy of the award

Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or case rested on production across three competitions. His 36 Bundesliga goals helped Bayern Munich win a 35th German top-flight title, and he scored in every round of the DFB Cup, including a hat-trick in the final against Stuttgart. Under Vincent Kompany, Bayern completed the domestic double. Europe added another 14 goals in 13 UEFA Champions League appearances. Only Kylian Mbappé scored more as Bayern reached the semifinals. Kane then struck six times at the FIFA World Cup 2026, helping England finish third—their best result since 1966. The breadth of that record is the point: this wasn’t an award built on one hot run. Kane is the seventh player to win the Ballon d’Or while at a Bundesliga club. The previous six were Gerd Müller (1970), Franz Beckenbauer (1972 and 1976), Allan Simonsen (1977), Kevin Keegan (1978 and 1979), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (1980 and 1981), and Sammer.

Bayern’s strength shows in the rankings

Kane’s win came alongside a strong showing from his club-mates. Michael Olise placed ninth after recording 34 direct goal involvements in the Bundesliga in 2025/26, a campaign that had already earned him the previous season’s Player of the Season award. Luis Díaz finished 24th and Dayot Upamecano 26th; they were the other Bundesliga players among the 30 nominees. Kane made a point of sharing the credit. He thanked his Bayern team-mates for pushing him and competing alongside him, and praised Kompany—who, Kane said, was at home or still in hospital—while wishing him well. He also thanked the club’s staff, saying his time at Bayern had helped him grow as a player, person, and leader. Representing the club, he said, was a privilege, and he was glad to bring the trophy back to Munich. The top 10 underline how crowded the field was. Mbappé of Real Madrid and France was second; Barcelona and Spain’s Lamine Yamal third; Rodri, listed with Manchester City/Barcelona and Spain, fourth; Lionel Messi of Inter Miami and Argentina fifth; Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Paris Saint-Germain and Georgia sixth; Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain and France seventh; Erling Haaland of Manchester City and Norway eighth; Olise of Bayern and France ninth; and Fabián Ruiz of Paris Saint-Germain and Spain tenth.
