Why these records stand out
Newcastle have made Erling Haaland work harder than any other Premier League opponent: he has scored just once in seven meetings. Aston Villa have also kept him quiet, with one goal conceded across five league games. For a striker who has scored against every Premier League side he’s faced, those records stand out, even if they don’t make either team a dependable answer to the problem he poses.
“Bogey team” is a relative label when the player in question is Haaland. Chelsea and Tottenham have each conceded four goals to him in eight matches, but even those returns look modest by his standards. The useful comparison isn’t simply whether he’s scored; it’s how often he’s found a way through across repeated meetings. A quiet game can be a matter of circumstance. A run across several fixtures starts to look like a pattern, though it still doesn’t explain by itself why that pattern formed.
Newcastle have kept Haaland to one goal
Haaland’s only Premier League goal against Newcastle came in his first meeting with them, a 3-3 draw at St James’ Park in 2022. He hasn’t scored against them since. That makes Newcastle the clearest case in this group: they’ve faced him repeatedly in the league and have kept his scoring to a single goal throughout those meetings.
The sequence is striking because Haaland’s first league appearance against Newcastle did produce a goal, so this isn’t a record built on one early shutout. The challenge has been sustaining that outcome over subsequent games. A striker’s scoring record can swing sharply from match to match, and one goal conceded across seven meetings doesn’t mean Newcastle have had him under control in every passage of play. It does mean they’ve prevented those encounters from turning into a regular source of goals for him.
The pattern holds across cup competitions, too: he went scoreless in two League Cup matches and one FA Cup match against Newcastle. Those results add to the story, though cup ties are a separate sample from the league and shouldn’t be folded into the same tally. His next chance to add to that record is scheduled for Boxing Day. Until then, Newcastle’s figures remain unusually low across several kinds of meeting.
Villa’s record is built on a long dry spell
Aston Villa have allowed Haaland to score once in five Premier League matches. He found the net in a 1-1 draw in their first meeting, then went four games without scoring against the Birmingham side. The shape of that record matters: Villa didn’t begin by keeping him out entirely, but they’ve avoided conceding to him in each of the four league fixtures that followed.
There’s a qualification: Haaland hasn’t played Villa at the Etihad since 2023. That limits what the figures can tell us about how he might fare in a future meeting there, since the record doesn’t cover every possible setting. Even so, limiting him to one goal across five league fixtures is a notable return. Whether that run survives their lunchtime kick-off is another matter, and past results can’t settle it in advance.
Here’s the thing: a scoring drought against one opponent says less about a team’s entire defensive quality than it does about a particular run of games. But it can still be meaningful. Villa have repeatedly kept the match scoreline from adding another Haaland goal, and that’s a more durable result than a single isolated blank. This is more significant than it looks, while still being a narrow claim about the fixtures played.
Bournemouth and London rivals have had mixed results
Bournemouth have conceded four goals in nine Premier League matches against Haaland, giving them the lowest scoring rate among the teams he’s faced most often. He scored on his first visit to the Vitality Stadium, then went four games without a goal. That stretch suggests they’ve had some success limiting his return, but the full record includes a later change in direction.
He later scored twice in the home match of the 2025/26 campaign and again in the return fixture, but failed to score against Bournemouth in City’s opening game of the current season. The sequence is a reminder that an opponent’s record can look very different depending on the period being discussed. Bournemouth had a run of games in which he didn’t score, then conceded multiple goals across the two matches described, before keeping him off the scoresheet in the season opener. The results don’t point to a permanent solution.
Chelsea and Tottenham have each conceded four goals in eight league meetings. Haaland scored twice in a 4-4 draw against Chelsea during 2023/24 and also found the net in 2024/25, but has gone scoreless in his last two matches against them. Against Spurs, he scored in his first meeting and in every season since except the most recent campaign. Both records contain goals and blanks, which makes them less striking than Newcastle’s longer scoring drought.
That said, four goals in eight matches is a relatively restrained return for a forward with Haaland’s record against Premier League opposition. It’s not evidence that either London club has solved him. The figures simply place their meetings in a different category from the fixtures where he has scored more freely.

What the records can—and can’t—tell us
These records don’t make any opponent a reliable barrier to Haaland. They do show that Newcastle, Villa and Bournemouth have found ways to keep his scoring below his usual pace—and Newcastle have done it for the longest stretch. A goals total is a useful starting point, but it can’t describe every part of a match or establish a single cause for a player’s return against a particular club.
If you’re working in this space, the distinction matters: a low total across repeated meetings is a pattern to watch, not a guarantee to build around. Similar scoring records often reflect several factors within the games themselves, and the numbers here don’t identify which one mattered most. The most defensible reading is also the simplest. Newcastle have conceded least often across the league meetings listed, Villa have kept Haaland scoreless in four straight league games after his first goal against them, and Bournemouth’s record includes both a dry spell and later goals.
And yet. The label “bogey team” has some value when it draws attention to an unusual run, as long as it isn’t mistaken for a prediction. Haaland has scored against every Premier League side he’s faced; these opponents have still managed to hold his totals down for stretches. That’s the tension these figures capture.
