Cologne’s home run survives, but Schalke leave with a point

A 0-0 draw kept Cologne unbeaten at home in the Bundesliga this season, but the scoreline also exposed the limits of both attacks. Schalke arrived having conceded only seven goals, one of the league’s best defensive records, while their four goals scored were the division’s lowest total. The visitors’ defensive strength held up; their shortage of goals remained visible. Cologne, meanwhile, had the better of the attacking numbers but couldn’t find a way through.
Cologne 0-0 Schalke René Wagner made one change to Cologne’s lineup, bringing in Mikey Moore. Schalke coach Miron Muslić made three, selecting Heechan Hwang, Junior Adamu and Junior Dina Ebimbe. The match at the RheinEnergieStadion finished without a goal despite openings at both ends. The selection changes suggested an effort to alter the balance, but neither side found the final action to turn a promising move into a goal. Cologne vs. Schalke proved a physical battle, with few clear-cut chances at either end.

First half: openings without a breakthrough

Schalke threatened first. In the fifth minute, Robin Gosens laid the ball off for Soufiane El-Faouzi, whose effort from nine yards rolled just wide. It was an early reminder that Cologne’s home record wouldn’t make the afternoon comfortable. Schalke could still get into dangerous positions, even if turning those moments into goals had been a problem. Cologne began to build pressure, and Saïd El Mala tested Loris Karius in the 17th minute. Ísak Jóhannesson put the rebound into the unguarded net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. That briefly looked like the breakthrough Cologne needed, but the decision kept the game level. El Mala went close again moments later, only for Karius to parry his follow-up wide. The sides reached half-time without a goal, though Cologne had given Schalke more to think about in the attacking third. Mikey Moore has played six out of seven Bundesliga games for Cologne this season.

Chances came, but Karius kept Schalke level

Schalke’s point owed a lot to Loris Karius. Cologne had the better share of the ball and more shots, yet the goalkeeper’s saves kept the score at 0-0. He stopped Jóhannesson and Saïd El Mala before the break, then dealt with crosses and punched away corners as the pressure continued. A goalkeeper can’t solve a team’s scoring problem on his own, but here Karius gave Schalke the time and security to stay in the match. The second half offered chances at both ends. Adamu headed Adil Aouchiche’s cross goalward, but Marvin Schwäbe turned it aside. At the other end, Marius Bülter and substitute Luca Waldschmidt were both denied in the 74th minute. Five minutes later, Satoshi Tanaka hit the outside of the post from a tight angle. Cologne had opportunities to make its territorial advantage count; Schalke, for its part, showed that its own threat hadn’t disappeared. The match opened up late, bringing yellow cards for Dina Ebimbe, Luka Lochoshvili, Vitalie Becker and Hasan Kuruçay, but neither side found a winner. The closing spell offered more urgency than precision. A point apiece was a fair reflection of the final score, though it won’t tell the full story of how often Cologne came close. Karius made the difference

Karius earned Man of the Match with 68 percent of the vote. That award feels deserved: his saves were the clearest reason Schalke left Cologne with a point, despite losing the possession battle and being outshot. The distinction matters because Schalke’s defensive record wasn’t enough by itself; the team still needed its goalkeeper to handle the pressure when Cologne found openings. That gap supports the view that Cologne generated the better chances, while also showing that the advantage wasn’t overwhelming. Expected goals describe the quality of chances rather than guarantee a result; Karius’s work and the finishing on the day still decided what went on the scoreboard. Saïd El Mala recorded the fastest speed, at 34.59 km/h, while Schalke’s Janik Jay Bachmann led pass efficiency at +1.62.

What the draw says about both teams

For Cologne, the home run survives, now stretching to four unbeaten Bundesliga games at the RheinEnergieSTADION. That’s a useful platform, but the draw leaves a straightforward question: can the side turn pressure and shots into goals when opponents stay compact? Schalke’s organisation made the task difficult, and the home side’s expected-goals edge indicates it did enough to create chances. Still, a clean sheet at home carries less satisfaction when the attack can’t supply a winner. For Schalke, the point reinforces the value of a strong defensive base, while the scoring record remains a clear concern. Four goals before the match was the league’s lowest total, and another goalless outing does little to ease that issue. The defence kept Cologne from converting its better chances; it couldn’t make the result more than a draw. Here’s the thing: a stalemate can flatter a team that creates less, but it can also reveal how much depends on one goalkeeper. This is more significant than it looks for Schalke, because Karius’s saves preserved a point without changing the underlying question of where the next goal will come from. And yet, Cologne’s inability to finish also deserves scrutiny. If you’re working in this space, the takeaway is less about possession than about what each side can do when the decisive moment arrives. A point. Two unfinished attacks.
