Sunderland are ready to open their door for Bayer Leverkusen’s Ernest Poku this summer.
Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered claims from Germany that the Premier League side and Nottingham Forest are in the picture to sign him.
He started this summer as a definite part of the Bundesliga side’s plans, but that isn’t the case anymore. The forward could move to England.
Sunderland take the lead
Bild on Monday have a report on the 22-year-old, and it only focuses on Sunderland. They don’t mention Nottingham Forest or any other club, which shows the Black Cats are now in the lead.
Régis Le Bris’ side are luring the Dutchman to move to the Stadium of Light. Luckily for them, Bayer Leverkusen have made him available in the market for €25m.
Ernest Poku is ‘on the verge of leaving’ the club and Sunderland are tempting him. His club teammate, Kerim Alajbegović, is also close to leaving for €35-40m. These two sales will see the German club raise at least €60m.

Who is Ernest Poku
The Dutchman is a product of AZ Alkmaar’s youth system and made his way into their first team in 2021.
Operating mainly as a right winger, he’s managed six goals and 14 assists from 79 matches for the Eredivisie side.
Last summer, Bayer Leverkusen signed him for a reported €10m plus €2m bonuses.
Ernest Poku didn’t operate in his preferred position in Germany. Instead, he was used mainly as a left wing-back and a right wing-back, and occasionally in other attacking positions
The versatile player finished his debut season at Bayer Leverkusen with six goals and 10 assists. With a contract until 2030, Transfermarkt value him at €25m, which is the price set by his club.
