Birmingham City are closing in on the signing of Luis Vázquez. Reports from Argentina and Italy indicate the Championship club are now in the final stages of completing a permanent deal for the Anderlecht striker.
South American journalist César Luis Merlo reports Birmingham have advanced negotiations with the Belgian side. Talks are now at the final stage.
Luca Bendoni goes a step further, stating an agreement has already been reached for a fee of around €3.5m (£3m). So the Argentine is already in the UK to complete the transfer.
The move would hand Chris Davies another attacking option. Birmingham continue to strengthen after returning to the Championship. And Vázquez appears set to become another addition before the new season.
Getafe spell ends permanent search
Luis Vázquez spent the second half of last season on loan at Getafe after struggling to establish himself at Anderlecht following his move from Boca Juniors in 2023.
The 24-year-old had managed just 14 appearances in the Belgian Pro League prior to the loan move. He averaged 51 minutes per game and scored twice. However, he found it difficult to nail down a regular starting role in Belgium.
At Getafe, he featured more regularly, making 17 La Liga appearances and averaging 71 minutes per match, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
Despite the increased involvement in Spain, the La Liga side ultimately chose not to activate the option to keep him permanently. Consequently, that left him back at Anderlecht, where his long-term future quickly became uncertain.
Before moving to Europe, Vázquez had built a strong reputation at Boca Juniors, scoring 26 goals in 97 first-team appearances.
Anderlecht paid around €4.5m (£3.9m) to sign him three years ago. So the Belgian club look set to accept a small loss if the reported fee is confirmed.
What happens next
With both Merlo and Bendoni reporting the transfer is effectively complete, there now appears to be little left beyond the formalities.
Bendoni says the striker is already in the UK, suggesting a medical and official announcement should follow shortly if everything proceeds as expected.
For Birmingham, the deal would add another centre-forward with experience in Argentina, Belgium and Spain, while also representing another sign of the club’s ambition ahead of the new Championship campaign.
